Crankset change

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I currently have a Shimano 105 compact crankset on my roadie (50/34). I bought new wheels as the cones on the old low-ish end Shimano set were pitted badly so seemed like a good excuse. Bought a new cassette and chain but thought I could get away without replacing the chain-rings but it is slipping badly when I put the power on, especially when standing, so assume that they need to be replaced as well (I probably left the old chain on too long so my fault).

Whilst it was only D grade, NSCC well represented on the podium at West Head.

I prefer the typo in the MWCC race report version, that gave the win to myself...

High end stolen bikes recovered

Noticed a report in yesterday's Manly Daily about a $17,000 bike being stolen from a Darley Road cafe at 6:45am Tuesday morning.

It was recovered later in the afternoon, along with four others suspected of being stolen, total estimated value of the 5 being $30,000.

If you've had a nice bike nicked you might want to get onto Manly Police ASAP so that a) you can get your bike back and b) this scumbag gets what's coming to him by confirming the bike isn't his.

New Record Set on El Presidente?

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

On Saturday's ride, six of us headed off to Akuna.

Rick Knowles managed 4 punctures on the way back - is this an El Pres record or can someone better this?

Oh and Dan got a puncture on nasty little hill to round out the slowest ride ever.

Things Cyclists Say

Grabbed it from the mtb forum for those that haven't seen it, was worth a post on it's own:

School Holiday drivers..

Perhaps it’s a run of bad luck, but riding/commuting during the holidays; I have had several brushes with cars on my commute route and a couple on my training rides, where normally I don’t notice any problems. No crashes yet but it’s most certainly got me thinking of upping my insurance cover…

Anyone else notice this or is it just me?

Bike path maps.

Does anyone know of a maps showing bike paths or safe cycling routes in Sydney? There seem to be quite a few councils offering maps of their local areas but nothing that combines this information into one.

My work is relocating from the city out to Rhodes. I was thinking of cycling but unsure of the best/safest route to take. ( I live in Mortdale)

Australian Road Cycling Championships

Don't forget... 2pm Sunday, SBS.

Will be really interesting to see how things go with the GreenEdge guys out in force Smiling

Any alternative to the popular GP4000s?

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

I've been using the popular Continental GP4000s for a few years now and have been more than happy with the grip available although they do seem to cut fairly easily and the wear isn't that great (no surprise given the soft compound).
I'll have to replace the current pair very soon for the reasons above and wondered if anyone had any other options for 'fast training' use whether it still be within the Continental brand or from another supplier.
Price wise, the same (~$48 each) or less would be preferable.

Brake and Gear Cables

So what do you use, my BMC came with Jag wires on a 105 groupset and there's so much friction isn't not funny (I also use a set of K-wings which probably doesn't help)

I've seen Gore, Shimano, the dreaded Jag, Yokozuna, Nokon, Powercordz any others?

Road Tubeless - First Impressions

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

So I've bitten the bullet and had a crack at it, at 106kg the thought of being able to run less pressure plus more flat protection sounded pretty good. This is the first time I've gone tubeless.

Setup:

HED C2 Rims, Stan's valves, and 2 layers of Stan's yellow tape with Hutchinson Intensives 700x25c (their actually 23c not 25c even though they say that).

Installation:

descent of mccarrs creek road

i am putting the call out there... what is the fastest known/recorded descent time of mccarrs creek road - starting at liberator general san martin drive (top end, not en route to west head) and finishing at mccarrs creek reserve? i'm not enticing suicide runs, just wondering.

the reason i'm posting this is i thought i was macking until i was overtaken!! haha

Road Ride Sunday

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

As the trails will be wet, anyone up for a road ride Sunday? I will be doing West Head + Akuna Bay (unless someone can suggest other options) so good to have some company. I did the Gorges last weekend and would be happy to do that again starting at Hornsby. I was thinking 9:30am start.
Cheers

Man versus machine on Alpe d'Huez

Well, it's not really an 'event' but interesting all the same.

What happens if you pit a superbike against a pushbike down the Tour de France's most famous mountain?

3 Peaks 2012

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Has anyone else been crazy enough to sign themselves up for next years edition of the 3 Peaks Challenge?

It would be good to get a group together to train with for the same goal.

For those who have ridden 3 Peaks previously any advice on gearing would be great.
I'm looking at getting a compact and a 27 or 28 on the rear.

Thanks
Chris

Sunday Scum?

I'm in need of a gentle spin at West Head this weekend... anyone keep for joining a Sunday scum from Terrey Hills shops? Usual route along West Head, round Akuna Bay and back.

Depending on how things pan out might be able to do this arvo.

Takers?

Sydney to Gong bike to borrow

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

My wife is signed up for Sydney to the Gong but only owns a mountain bike. As I would like her to actually enjoy the ride we always planned to borrow a roadie but it has fallen through. Are there any generous souls out there who have a functioning roadie in small or extra small who would be willing to loan it out for a day? It's a long shot but I would be extremely grateful and will happily send a case of frothy beverages your way as thanks. I am in Allambie Heights.

Thanks in advance!

Does anyone do this?

Boycot Top Gear Australia

I realize there are some cyclists that don't follow the rules of the road, but between driving and cycling it is uterly apperent that the ratio of incompetent/douche drivers if far higher.

Tonights section on cyclists was appauling and if it wasn't for the "lycra" he could have been talking about any 2 wheeled mode of transport including your every day motor bikes.

It was about as well thought out as Magda's rant!
