A few of the more senior NSCC members headed out to Goulburn for the NSW Masters Road Race and Crit championships; and generally ended up having a more challenging ride than was expected.
The road races were held on Saturday with temperatures near freezing for the early starters along with a strong wind; and while it had warmed up a bit for the later starters the wind had picked up even more. As a result most grades ended up coming home in small groups to make it a tough day out.
NSCC had some great results with Andrew East and Richard Spinks taking gold in the M2 and M9 categories respectively, while Belinda Hickson took silver in W2. Other notable rides came from Ross Hodgson, 4th in M7; Andrew Curro, 5th in M3 and Steven Horn, 5th in M5.
Personally I had a particularly tough ride, flatting out of the lead bunch after 35km and then chasing for the remaining 50km. I wasn’t too far off catching the second bunch (after the lead bunch split) at the top of the hill with 15km to go; but after that we were straight into a 30kmh headwind, and with this I dropped back to a couple of guys that I had passed earlier.
On Sunday the crits were held at the Marulan Driver Training Course. This again proved to be a tough course, with a climb up the main straight, followed by a technical descent leading into a sweeping hairpin back onto the straight. Again temperatures were near zero in the morning, with the wind picking up later in the day to add to the difficulty. As a result bunches were again splitting up with many riders having to be pulled from races after being lapped.
Only 3 NSCC members stayed for the crits, with Richard Spinks taking his second gold of the weekend in M9, while Archie Wilson had a great ride to take bronze in M6. I managed to stay in the bunch in M5 to finish 9th; but as there were only 14 finishers out of over 30 starters I was reasonably happy with that.

Sounds brutal.
Great report David Smiling
